Dear CCJS Friends and E-Letter Readers,
We send you our best wishes for Passover and Easter. In both of our traditions this is a time of reflection and renewal. A "season of freedom, season of rebirth" is the title of the " Walking God's Paths (WGP)" segment that explains the history and practices of Jews and Christians during their respective holy days. In keeping with our CCJS mission, this issue of our E-Letter provides links to quality interfaith education and dialogue resources designed to help you grow in knowledge and respect regarding your own and each other's religious history and practices. In this E-Letter you will also find photos from recent partnership events on campus and in our communities. Be sure to mark your calendars for future events listed in our "Save These Dates" section. As we approach the holy days ahead, let us reflect on the following quote from WGP: "During the spring season, two distinct but related religious traditions [Jewish and Christian] each ritualizes its own story in especially important ways. In the past, their relatedness has led to conflict. In the future it might be that a deeper understanding of each other's stories will lead instead to mutual respect and religious friendship."

Cannon Memorial Library and CCJS presented "Theology in Rabbinic Stories: Jewish and Christian Perspectives" on Thursday, February 4, 2010, featuring Rabbi Frank Sundheim and Deacon Dr. William Ditewig. CCJS staff member, Thomas Poynor, joins in the discussion. 
CCJS and the Philosophy, Theology, and Religion Department at Saint Leo University presented "Friendship and Faith: An  Introduction to Catholic-Jewish Dialogue," Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 4:30-5:30 p.m., featuring Laurin Jacobson and Linda Taggart.
CCJS board members Deacon Pat Macaulay of Saint Martha Catholic Church in Sarasota and Rabbi Jonathan Katz of Temple Beth Israel in Longboat Key hosted a very successful "Walking God's Paths: Christians and Jews in Candid Conversation" series. Participants look forward to sharing a Seder meal together soon.

Saint Leo University Student Television staff interviewed CCJS and University Ministry regarding Interfaith Education and  Dialogue programming. Taylor Gildard and Jorge Farchakh visited with Thomas Poynor and Magda Robles in the CCJS offices. They also filmed the CCJS February 23rd "Introduction to Catholic-Jewish Dialogue" program for broadcast on the SLU campus television station. |

Dr. Philip Cunningham, CCJR Secretary-Treasurer and Director of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations of Saint Joseph's University, recommends new Passover and Lenten resources now available in the Dialogika section of the CCJR website.

A Synagogue Visit for Saint Leo University Students and Faculty, Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 2 p.m. at Congregation Beth Am in Tampa
Rabbi Jason Rosenberg of Congregation Beth Am in Tampa has generously agreed to host a synagogue visit for Saint Leo University students and faculty on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at 2 pm. CCJS working with Dr. Randall Woodard, professor of theology and religion at Saint Leo University, arranged this interfaith education session to supplement coursework in REL 123 Foundations in Christian Faith. This required course includes study of the Hebrew Bible as well as the history of Judaism, the Jewish people, and the Church. The course textbook, "Theological Foundations: Concepts and Methods for Understanding Christian Faith" (St. Mary's Press 2007) is an excellent resource for both student and adult learners.
Annual Model Seder at Saint Leo University, Wednesday,

 The CCJS and Saint Leo University Campus Ministries will host an interfaith 'Model Seder' to be conducted by CCJS board member Rabbi Gary Klein of Temple Ahavat Shalom in Palm Harbor. Magda Robles, Assistant Director for University Ministry, has organized this important interfaith education and dialogue event for several years. The teaching Seder is an exciting and enlightening opportunity for students, faculty, and other members of the community to experience the Passover tradition. In 2008 this very successful event was attended by more than 50 people. This year the annual meeting of the CCJS board will be held on campus so that all CCJS board members can join in the Model Seder celebration. Reservations are required.

Venice Diocese Hosts Yom Hashoah Memorial Service April 25, 2010
Bishop Frank J. Dewane and the Diocese of Venice have announced the annual Diocesan Yom Hashoah Memorial Service to be held on Sunday, April 25th, at 2:30 p.m. in Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Avenue West, Venice, FL.  CCJS Board Member, Dr. John Conroy, shares the following information and link regarding an important interfaith dialogue event that took place January 31, 2010, on Marco Island, Florida:
Almost ten years ago, Rabbi Howard Greenstein, of the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, co-operated with Mrs. Joan Dunham, of Bonita Springs, Florida, in founding the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County. Both founders are now of blessed memory. The link to Marco Island was emphasized on January 31st when the first of two dialogues of 2010 occurred in Rabbi Greenstein's sanctuary. The dialogue attracted almost 175 people, anxious to participate in the conversation.
