Nostra Aetate on Campus

In recognition of the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Vatican II declaration, "Nostra Aetate," the CCJS programming theme for this year has been designated: "Nostra Aetate at 45: Remember, Reflect. Renew." The Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religion at Saint Leo University, in recognition of this historic event, created a Special Topics course for its students this Fall to be taught by Deacon Dr. William T. Ditewig, Professor of Theology.

REL 400: The Documents of the Second Vatican Council

The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), a solemn gathering of the world's 2600 Catholic bishops, was convened by Pope John XXIII in order to "reform and renew" the Catholic Church in the contemporary world. The results of their deliberations are contained in sixteen documents. This course will first set the various contexts for the Council and its work, and then focus on one of the most influential contributions of the Council: its Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate). In recognition of this foundational document's 45th anniversary of promulgation, students will examine its ongoing significance and subsequent developments.
